I
experienced as most all of you have, the cupping and major
divots into the cords of the Dunlop’s. I was only able to get 4200 miles
out of the stock tires and I was looking for something better.
On the
Retro we are limited in our choices. We can choose the Dunnies
again, Metzeler Bridgestone or Avon’s. Most were
trying the Metzler. Everyone seemed to like the tire, held the
road well, fair in the water but the mileage reports were not
the best. I was hearing anywhere from 6 to 8K miles. The
Avon’s were getting much better mileage reports but nothing
really being said about the tire itself.
I put the
first set of Avon’s on and immediately had the opportunity to
test them in rain. Even two up the Avon’s handle the rain in
excellent fashion. They are smooth handling, grip the road
well and great in corners. I am currently running my fifth
set and in my opinion, the Avon is the best option for the
VTX.
The
mileage you will see out of any tire depends on your driving
habits. I have ridden the Avon two up, with luggage loaded,
aggressive one up, even city stop and go traffic and have
never had to replace the rear before 10K miles. I usually
average 12 to 14K on the rear and 14 to 17K on the front.
The
Avon tire went through some production issues late in 2005 and
early 2006 with tires that wobble and shake. They either won't
balance out or it takes excessive wheel weights to make them
road worthy. Tires prior to and after this timeframe seem to
be fine. If you happen to have an Avon that is giving
problems, I would suggest contacting your tire dealer
immediately for a replacement. Most dealer's will work with
you to get you into a trouble free Avon Tire.
